Ames council approves 'sip and stroll' social district (amestrib.com) — Ames residents will soon be allowed to carry alcoholic drinks in a designated downtown "Sip and Stroll" social district during approved special events, following unanimous city council approval. Boundaries were tightened to stay north of the railroad tracks, and the first test run will be the Witches' Walk on Oct. 8, giving locals a chance to see how the new rules work.
   

2. New Ames recycling system recieves large grant from Iowa EPC (radioiowa.com) — Ames is overhauling how it handles trash and recycling, backed by nearly $100,000 in state loans for a new Resource Recovery and Recycling Campus. The project will add equipment to pull recyclables and metals from garbage before it heads to the Carroll County landfill, aiming to recover tens of thousands of tons of material and improve local waste services.
   

3. 11 Quaint Small Towns Where You Can Retire on $1,600 a Month (Or Less) (financebuzz.com) — Ames is highlighted as an affordable, college-town option for retirees, with riverfront trails that follow the South Skunk River and Ioway Creek and a regional medical center in town. 4. ISU Repair Café helps repair items, educates students (iowastatedaily.com) — Iowa State's annual Repair Café brought students, faculty and staff together with volunteers, including partners from the Ames Repair Café, to fix bikes, jewelry, clothing, electronics and more. Attendees stayed with their items to learn repair skills, while organizers emphasized reducing waste and building confidence so people in Ames can mend their own belongings between future cafés.
