1. New details in shooting that killed one man and injured four along N. Ardenwood Drive (wbrz.com) — Baton Rouge police are investigating a Saturday evening shooting at the Renaissance Gateway Apartments on North Ardenwood Drive that left a 22-year-old man dead and four others wounded. Officers say the gunfire followed earlier disputes between two groups, and they believe multiple shooters may be involved as they review surveillance video and interview witnesses. 
2. 'An unprecedented opportunity': East Baton Rouge Parish seeks $125 million federal grant to fight crime (wafb.com) — East Baton Rouge Parish leaders are racing to secure up to $125 million in federal crime-fighting funds that could reshape public safety in Baton Rouge. The application seeks money for police overtime, equipment, re-entry programs, bail reform and prevention efforts, aiming to tackle crime rates long above the national average and improve how safe residents and visitors feel in the capital region.
3. Comite Diversion Canal more than halfway done, but flood insurance relief is still a ways off (wbrz.com) — Baton Rouge leaders are pressing FEMA to update flood maps now that the Comite Diversion Canal project has passed 60 percent completion, hoping to bring earlier relief on flood insurance premiums. FEMA, however, is waiting for the diversion structure itself to reach 50 percent, leaving homeowners worried about rising costs until at least 2027.
4. Louisiana Lottery Powerball results for Aug. 31, 2026 (shreveporttimes.com) — Powerball players can now check the Aug. 31, 2026 winning numbers and, if they scored big, claim prizes right here in Baton Rouge. The Louisiana Lottery's headquarters on Laurel Street handles mail-in claims and in-person redemptions over $600, with any-size prizes processed during weekday business hours for lucky ticket holders across the capital region.
5. Gov. Landry appoints Louisiana lawmaker as DOTD multimodal commerce commissioner (wbrz.com) — From Baton Rouge, Gov. Jeff Landry has tapped State Rep. Mark Wright to lead DOTD's Office of Multimodal Commerce, overseeing ports, rail, aviation and trucking across Louisiana. The move aims to strengthen the state's transportation network and economic competitiveness, with officials saying Wright's legislative and maritime background will guide major infrastructure and logistics decisions affecting communities statewide, including the capital region.
