Possible Nor’Easter Looms For MA: Here's What To Know

The potential for a powerful, early-season nor'easter looms across coastal Massachusetts and New England with days of heavy rain, strong winds and coastal erosion possible, depending on the storm track.

While still days away, with uncertainty in the forecast, the possibility exists that the storm will move in Friday and cause widespread damage with leaves still on the trees and an astronomically high tide.

"The track will highly influence the storm’s impact," said AccuWeather expert meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. "The storm may wander out to sea for a time, then drift west and return closer to the coast later this week. More significant impacts will occur should the storm strengthen over open water and turn back toward the mid-Atlantic or New England coast, while less severe impacts would occur if the storm continued moving along rather than turning back toward the coast."

A full-blown nor'easter could lead to major travel disruptions due to flooding rain, wind gusts that could trigger power outages and significant coastal flooding, AccuWeather said.

The full moon will raise astronomical tide levels later this week, and the storm will push water levels even higher.

"This storm may be capable of producing tropical-storm-force wind gusts later this week, but is not expected to organize into an official tropical entity at this time," said AccuWeather expert meteorologist Alyssa Glenny. "Regardless of classification, rain, wind and coastal impacts would remain relatively the same, although there could be a localized swath of stronger wind gusts near the center of the storm's circulation."

The National Weather Service on Monday was calling for a 60 percent chance of rain Friday night into Sunday with wind gusts to 38 mph.
