Beverly To Roll Out New Automated Trash Collection With City-Issued Carts
Residents and businesses in Beverly will need to use the city-issued carts when automated curbside pickup begins July 1.

BEVERLY, MA — Beverly's curbside solid waste program is set to change July 1, 2026, when the city begins an automated collection system using city-provided trash and recycling carts.
Under the plan, each customer will receive one 65-gallon cart for solid waste and one 95-gallon cart for recycling at a City Council-approved annual fee of $300. Customers may request a 35-gallon solid waste cart for an annual fee of $200 or a 95-gallon solid waste cart for a proposed annual fee of $400.
Casella, the city's new trash hauler as of July 1, will begin delivering the carts next week. All carts will be black. The trash carts will have a black lid, while recycling carts will have a blue lid.

The new system will use specially designed trucks with mechanical arms to lift and empty carts.
Customers who find the standard 95-gallon recycling cart too large may request a 65-gallon or 35-gallon recycling cart instead. The City said changing to a smaller recycling cart will not reduce the rate.

For multi-unit residential buildings that receive city collection, each residence will receive the standard-issued trash and recycling carts unless a smaller option is requested. A fee will be assessed per unit, regardless of the number of carts provided to the building.
Property owners and commercial customers may opt out of the program by submitting an Opt-Out Request Form to the Engineering office. The City said the minimum opt-out period is one year. When a property opts out, collection of solid waste, recycling, yard waste and bulky items will stop, and the city will retrieve issued carts.
Property owners who opt out must show proof of an acceptable private hauling contract or alternative to the Commissioner of Public Services.
The city said old barrels will be collected curbside during the weeks of July 27 and Sept. 21 on each customer’s regular collection day.
Requests for smaller carts or to opt out must be made by the property owner by Aug. 15. Questions can be sent to the Engineering office at trash@beverlyma.gov.
