Canton Police Explain How They Use License Plate Reader Technology

Police said the Flock system helped identify a vehicle in one case and safely locate a missing person in another.

CANTON, MA — Canton police are explaining how the department uses automated license plate readers after public questions about the technology.

Information obtained through the Flock Safety system recently helped officers identify a vehicle connected to an investigation involving significant property damage in Canton, Police Chief Michael Daniels said in a Monday announcement. In a separate incident, the technology helped officers safely locate a vulnerable missing person.

The automated system helps law enforcement identify vehicles associated with criminal investigations and other public safety needs, according to Daniels. It may be used in cases involving missing or endangered people, stolen vehicles, wanted individuals and property crimes.

Access is limited to legitimate law enforcement and public safety purposes under applicable laws and department policy, Daniels said. Searches and other system activity are logged and subject to review and audit.

Police do not access or share information without a legitimate law enforcement purpose, Daniels said.
