📰 News we're reading

1. Rod & Gun at 100: Love of the outdoors helps members forge enduring bonds (concordbridge.org) — A century-old Concord Rod & Gun Club is celebrating its 100th year, highlighting kids' fishing derbies, popular archery programs, and a tight-knit social scene on its 48-acre Strawberry Hill Road property. Members describe how the club balances changing views on guns with outdoor education, scholarships, and community events like the sold-out annual game dinner that bring Concord families together.

2. Camp Thoreau Redevelopment Gets $61M Construction Loan (bankerandtradesman.com) — A major 237-unit apartment complex at the Thoreau Club property in Concord is moving forward after securing a $60.7 million construction loan, with local zoning approvals already in place. The Chapter 40B project, plus another Baker Avenue redevelopment, signals a wave of new housing that could significantly reshape Concord's housing stock, traffic, and neighborhood character in the coming years.

3. William Frederick 'Fritz' Kussin Jr., 93 (concordbridge.org) — Concord is mourning William "Fritz" Kussin Jr., a fifth-generation resident, beloved children's shop owner, and 2006 Honored Citizen who helped shape the town's business and civic life. His October 23 memorial at Trinitarian Congregational Church will honor decades of service, from running Kussin's/Fritz & Gigi's on Main Street to volunteering at Orchard House and Emerson Hospital.

4. Thomas Everett Black, 82 (concordbridge.org) — Longtime Concord Runners member and Navy veteran Thomas Everett Black has died at 82, leaving deep ties to nearby Lincoln and Concord. Friends and neighbors can honor him at an October 17 memorial at St. Anne's in-the-Fields, with arrangements through Concord Funeral Home, reflecting his decades of community, church, and restorative justice service.

5. Governor's Council incumbents sweep primary challenges (wbur.org) — Concord resident Mara Dolan easily won her Democratic primary for Governor's Council District 3, carrying every precinct except her opponent's hometown of Wellesley and heading into November unopposed. Her victory, along with other incumbents' wins statewide, means the council that confirms judges and parole decisions will likely maintain its current direction for the next term.
