Federal Agents Detain Person During Vehicle Stop In Melrose

Mayor Jen Grgoraitis and other city leaders are seeking further information in the aftermath of the operation.

MELROSE, MA — A person was detained by federal law enforcement agents in the city Wednesday morning, according to Mayor Jen Grigoraitis.

The stop occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, near the intersection of West Wyoming Avenue and Corey Street. City officials received a witness report that agents stopped a vehicle and detained its occupant in what officials understood to be a targeted operation.

Neither the Melrose Police Department nor the mayor's office was informed of the operation beforehand or afterward, Grigoraitis said in a statement Wednesday. City officials were seeking additional information and context from federal law enforcement agencies.

“While we do not know the specific circumstances of or justifications for this detention, the City of Melrose does not cooperate or assist with federal immigration enforcement as a matter of local policy and state law,” Grigoraitis said.

The mayor encouraged residents to review the city's resources for immigrants, which include information about legal assistance, family emergency planning, and locating family members in immigration detention. The page also links to the police department's immigration policy, which was originally issued in March 2017 and most recently updated in May 2025.
