Melrose Volunteers to Prepare Farmers’ Market Meals for Local Seniors

Three local entities are hosting the volunteer effort together.

MELROSE, MA — A community meal-preparation event will provide fresh meals to residents of low-income senior housing in the city.l

Community Meal Prep Club, the Melrose Farmers’ Market and The Food Drive are hosting the volunteer effort Thursday, Aug. 6 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Bowden Park on West Emerson Street. Volunteers will prepare meals using locally grown produce from market vendors, and The Food Drive will distribute the meals following the event.

Children can participate in designated kid-friendly activities, while teenagers are welcome with a parent or guardian. No advance registration is required, and volunteers may stop by the Community Meal Prep Club tent during market hours. The effort is being held in connection with Sustainability Day at the farmers’ market, which offers a $15 match for shoppers using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and also accepts Healthy Incentives Program benefits.

The meal-preparation effort is part of a broader network of food-access programs serving Melrose residents. The city lists free meals distributed through the Melrose Community Freezer each Sunday, along with several community meal programs in Melrose and neighboring communities. Older residents can also receive nutrition assistance through the Milano Center’s weekday congregate lunch program and Meals on Wheels, which is provided through Mystic Valley Elder Services.

Melrose’s Health and Human Services Department has identified access to social services as a continuing priority. In its fiscal 2027 budget memo, the department said it works with city agencies, community organizations and volunteers to strengthen support for residents. Its work includes helping residents facing housing instability and connecting people with case-management and support services.
