Salem's Plummer Youth Promise Names Child Welfare Attorney To Board (patch.com) — Salem's Plummer Youth Promise has added child welfare attorney and policy expert Sue Anamier O'Callaghan to its Board of Trustees as it advances a major capital campaign and new strategic plan. Her lived experience as an adoptee and extensive advocacy work are expected to strengthen the Salem organization's efforts to improve outcomes for local youth and families.
   

2. Salem Halloween 2026: 50 Volunteers Sought For Haunted Happenings Grand Parade (patch.com) — Salem's Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, the traditional kickoff to the city's Halloween season, is seeking about 50 volunteers to help manage the Oct. 1 event. Residents can assist with lineup at Shetland Park, pedestrian crossings, and crowd safety along the route, and are encouraged to attend a Salem Chamber of Commerce coordination meeting and will receive a Haunted Happenings T‑shirt.
   

3. Salem 400+ Sculpture 'Traces of Arrival' Dedication Thursday (patch.com) — Salem is dedicating a new public sculpture, Traces of Arrival, at the Salem Ferry Terminal as part of the city's Salem 400+ quadricentennial celebration. The public artwork, by Seattle artist Roark T. Congdon, reflects Salem Harbor's navigation history, Indigenous pathways, colonial expansion, and global trade routes through intersecting weathering steel forms.
   

4. Lt. Gov. Driscoll Helps Salem State Mark Progress on Geothermal, Solar Canopy Projects (patch.com) — Salem residents may soon see big sustainability changes at Salem State University, where a new geothermal loop and solar canopy are being installed to heat, cool, and power key campus buildings more efficiently. Lt. Gov. and former Salem mayor Kim Driscoll joined campus leaders to celebrate the clean-energy upgrades, which are backed by millions in state funding and tie into broader efforts to modernize public higher education infrastructure.
   

5. Salem To Deploy Drones, Reinforced Barricades for October Special Event Road Closures (rock929rocks.com) — If you live or work in Salem, expect major October traffic changes as the city rolls out reinforced barricades, heavy police presence, cameras, and counter‑drone measures around Haunted Happenings events. Key streets like Essex, Derby, Congress, and Washington will see parking bans and evening closures, while free weekend and holiday parking on Jefferson Avenue and encouragement to use the train or ferry aim to ease congestion downtown.
