Somerville Man Arrested In Cambridge On Drug And Gun Charges

SOMERVILLE, MA — A resident was arrested after Cambridge police say a shoplifting investigation uncovered a loaded handgun and suspected narcotics, the Cambridge Police Department announced Thursday.

Abdul Ahmed, 52, was arrested on Friday, July 3, after officers responded to a report of a shoplifting in progress at a business on Alewife Brook Parkway.

Police said a store employee reported that Ahmed had stolen merchandise from the business. Officers located and stopped him outside, where they allegedly found him in possession of a loaded handgun with an obliterated serial number.

During the investigation, officers also recovered multiple plastic baggies containing what they described as trafficking quantities of substances believed to be heroin or fentanyl and crack cocaine, as well as several loose prescription pills. Police said Ahmed does not have a Massachusetts License to Carry, making his alleged possession of the firearm and ammunition illegal.

Ahmed was charged with shoplifting by asportation, carrying a firearm without a License to Carry, carrying ammunition without a License to Carry, possession of a Class A drug, possession of a Class B drug, possession of a Class E drug, and an outstanding warrant issued by a court in Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

Ahmed has since been arraigned in Cambridge District Court, where he was held pending a dangerousness hearing. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case.
