WORCESTER, MA — A culvert replacement project on Salisbury Street near Whisper Drive is expected to affect traffic through the summer and into the fall.

Work began Monday, Jun. 1, on the city project, which will replace a culvert that crosses Salisbury Street in the area of Whisper Drive. The project will be completed in two phases, with crews working on one side of the street at a time and traffic diverted to the other side.

Temporary traffic signals will alternate northbound and southbound traffic through the work zone. Drivers should expect delays, particularly during the morning and evening commute periods.

The Salisbury Street culvert carries Beaver Brook and is located about 300 feet south of Whisper Drive, according to City of Worcester bid documents. The project includes removal of the existing stone masonry culvert and installation of a new precast concrete box culvert, precast wingwalls, drainage work and roadway reconstruction, according to the documents.

The city estimated the project cost at $1.195 million, according to Worcester purchasing records. Onyx Corporation was listed as the project awardee after submitting a bid of $1,117,863.
