Worcester Wall Of Women Mural Painting Begins This Week
The mural will feature portraits of 40 women from Worcester's past and present.

WORCESTER, MA — A new large-scale mural honoring women who helped shape Worcester will begin to take shape this week.
Artists are set to begin painting the Worcester Wall of Women mural this week on the exterior wall of YWCA Central Massachusetts along Francis McGrath Boulevard, where the project will feature hand-painted portraits of 40 women from Worcester’s past and present.
The first 40 women were selected by a committee of local women and include leaders, advocates, educators, artists and changemakers, according to the YWCA. The mural is intended to transform the wall into an outdoor gallery that recognizes women whose work and lives have contributed to the city.
The women featured in the first phase include Linda Cavaioli, Deb Hall, Harriette Chandler, Sue Mailman, Edna Spencer, Nellie Toney, Robyn Kennedy, Bethany Veney, Abby Kelley Foster, Judith Smith Levin, Margaret Guzman, Dorothea Dix, Ettie Len Toy Chin Hong, Zara Cully, Jennie Cora Clough Busby, Hazel Berry, Shirley Carter, Sarah Ella Wilson, Barbara Carroll, Esther Howland, Betty Price, Esther Forbes, Stacey Luster, Albina Osipowich, Gertrude Halstead, Sarai Rivera, Donna Red Wing, Ogretta McNeil, Hepsibeth Bowman Hemenway, Mary Heintzelman Gifford Bowne, Arabella Tucker, Parlee Jones, Gloria Hall, Jennifer Davis Carey, Gladys Rodriguez, Katharine Forbes Erskine, Lois Green, Meridith Wesby, Frances Perkins and Etel Haxhiaj.
The project is supported in part by a Worcester Arts Council grant, as well as local foundations and individual contributors. The Worcester Arts Council is a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council.
