📰 News we're reading

1. POP mural 'History of Tomorrow' brightens DHM office building (downriversundaytimes.com) — A new student-created mural, "The History of Tomorrow," now brightens the Dearborn Historical Museum offices, celebrating the city's past, present, and future through bold imagery and local history. Dearborn teens in the Pockets of Perception program designed and painted the piece as a paid summer internship, with city leaders praising the project as a powerful way for youth to shape public spaces and tell Dearborn's story.

2. AAUW to hold annual book sale Oct. 2 to 4 at the DISC (downriversundaytimes.com) — Dearborn readers can stock up on bargains when AAUW–Dearborn hosts its annual used book and media sale Oct. 2–4 at the Dearborn Ice Skating Center on Ford Road. With thousands of sorted titles, children's books, and vintage finds, plus early-bird hours and steep price drops, the long-running fundraiser supports local educational programs and scholarships for women and girls.

3. Six Dearborn elementary schools recognized for excellence in reading education (downriversundaytimes.com) — Six Dearborn Public Schools elementaries—River Oaks, Maples, Nowlin, Miller, Oakman, and Howard—have been honored for achieving higher-than-expected third grade reading scores despite serving many low-income students. District leaders celebrate the recognition while stressing ongoing work, including rolling out Science of Reading practices across all elementary schools to further boost literacy for Dearborn children.

4. DTE Outage: When will the power be back on? (fox2detroit.com) — Dearborn residents are among hundreds of thousands across metro Detroit still dealing with power outages and potential flooding after severe midweek storms. DTE expects to restore electricity to most affected customers by Saturday, but with more rain in the forecast and a flood advisory in effect, people in Dearborn should prepare for lingering outages, localized flooding, and crews working throughout the holiday weekend.

5. Which metro Detroit restaurants opened in August? (freep.com subscription) — A colorful new Homies doughnut shop has just opened on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, bringing more than 30 creative sweet and savory varieties, plus a drive-thru marked by a giant doughnut. The story also rounds up other recent restaurant openings across metro Detroit, but Dearborn residents get a nearby, highly Instagrammable spot to try right away.
