Investigators believe the 20-year-old Detroit man pulled out a gun and robbed another person of their watch.
A bystander, who has a valid permit to carry a firearm (CPL), witnessed the robbery and fatally shot the 20-year-old, according to police.
It's unclear whether the suspected shooter will face charges in connection with the shooting. It is also unclear which prom or school the people involved in the party had attended.
Hazel Park city officials said a group of people rented out the house to host the after-prom party. They announced Monday a six-month moratorium on short-term rental, including Airbnb and VRBO.
Police ask anyone with more information about the shooting to call the Hazel Park Police Department at 248-542-6161.
