📰 News we're reading

1. Kalamazoo County employees could swap holidays in 2027 (wkzo.com) — Kalamazoo County is considering ending its paid day off on November election days and instead giving employees Indigenous Peoples Day starting next fall. County leaders say expanded absentee and early voting options make the election holiday unnecessary, while a Monday observance better fits court and sheriff scheduling. The board will discuss the change Tuesday, with limited election-time leave still possible.

2. Planning commission approves 400-megawatt battery storage project (mlive.com) — Comstock Township's Planning Commission has approved a special land use permit and site plan for a 400‑megawatt battery energy storage facility on the Hickory Ridge Golf Course property in Kalamazoo County. The project could bring an estimated $6.6 million in payments to the township over 20 years and up to $2 million annually in property taxes, while requiring strict noise, groundwater, staffing, emergency response, and decommissioning safeguards.

3. Judge rules new board to take control of Kalamazoo co-op (woodtv.com) — Control of Kalamazoo's People's Food Co-Op has shifted after a Kalamazoo County Circuit Court judge ruled in favor of the group considered the new board, ordering transfer of keys and materials within seven days. The decision follows months of member concerns over governance, transparency, and finances, and sets a timeline for new board elections while clarifying who is legally in charge.

4. Man killed, woman and child injured in Kalamazoo crash, police say (arcwestmichigan.com) — A serious crash on Portage Street in Kalamazoo left a 37-year-old man dead and injured a 48-year-old woman and a 10-year-old child, according to public safety officials. The section between East Cork Street and Kingston Avenue has reopened, but investigators expect the immediate crash area to remain closed for an extended period while they work the scene.

5. Ingram, Schleppe agree to terms with K-Wings (prohockeynews.com) — Kalamazoo hockey fans will see two new rookie forwards on the Wings roster this season, as the team has signed Adam Ingram and Tyler Schleppe for 2026-27. Both are coming off strong college careers and brief ECHL stints, adding fresh scoring potential and depth to Kalamazoo's offense.
