Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo seeks more volunteers with students back next week (wwmt.com) — Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo is urgently seeking about 50 new volunteers, especially for middle and high school students in Kalamazoo Public Schools. Locals can tutor, mentor, or support classrooms with flexible schedules, no teaching background required, and training plus background checks provided to help students stay on track academically and emotionally. 
2. Kalamazoo police make 'first' arrest in deadly July shooting (woodtv.com) — Kalamazoo police have arrested 30-year-old Artkelly Jerom Anderson on an open murder charge in the July 11 shooting death of 21-year-old Vontavion Jackson on Westnedge Avenue. Investigators say this is only the first arrest and are urging anyone with information to contact KDPS or Silent Observer as they pursue additional suspects.
3. Kalamazoo police investigate 2 shootings involving minors within 18 hours (fox17online.com) — Kalamazoo Public Safety is investigating two separate shootings that injured teenagers at Candlewyk Apartments and on Stuart Avenue within 18 hours, with one teen suspect already in custody. Police are also seeking tips in the drive-by killing of 30-year-old Angel Marie Curtis on Florence Street, with a $1,000 Silent Observer reward for information leading to an arrest.
4. Kalamazoo County health leaders lay groundwork for new childcare millage (woodtv.com) — Kalamazoo County officials are mapping out how to roll out the newly approved childcare millage, expected to generate about $6 million in its first year starting January 2027. A task force and advisory council will help decide staffing, spending priorities, and accountability measures, with leaders stressing countywide impact beyond the city of Kalamazoo and plans for third‑party evaluation.
5. Baseball bat attack caught on video, woman arrested (mlive.com) — Kalamazoo police arrested a 21-year-old woman after an assault with a baseball bat near the train tracks just north of downtown, an incident captured in a widely shared video. The confrontation on North Edwards Street began as a verbal dispute and left one person with minor injuries, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
