Lt. Col. Jonathan Skinner highlighted Newton County’s long military ties, and community awards honored Charlie Walker, Ashley Duke, and 2026 Man and Woman of the Year Chris Spence and Kay Killens.

The Newton County Appeal is accepting 2026 First Responder of the Year nominations, and the winner will be spotlighted in a special section honoring the everyday heroes who protect our local communities.

• Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office has first successful search with new K-9 Deputy (wtok.com) — Newton County deputies recently teamed up with Lauderdale County’s new K-9, Mark, to successfully track down a person who fled from law enforcement, marking the dog’s first big win. The search, which also involved Mississippi Highway Patrol, is encouraging Lauderdale County’s sheriff to pursue adding more canines that could assist nearby communities and schools, including in Newton County.
