📰 News we're reading

• One dead, two injured after shootout in Kansas City QuikTrip parking lot (kctv5.com subscription) — Kansas City police are investigating a Sunday shootout in a QuikTrip parking lot on East 63rd Street that left one man dead and two others injured. Officers arrived to find Raytown police already giving first aid to victims in the strip mall area. Detectives say several people who knew each other argued before exchanging gunfire, and all involved vehicles fled before officers arrived.

• Lady Beetles and Aphids: Why Releases Often Fall Short (morningagclips.com) — Kansas City gardeners get practical advice from MU Extension on why store-bought lady beetles often fail to control aphids in local yards. Instead of relying on releases, residents are urged to support naturally occurring lady beetles by planting nectar-rich flowers, tolerating low aphid levels early, and avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides that kill beneficial insects.

• AXIS And Miambiance Selected Pacemaker Finalists (mdcthereporter.com) — Kansas City will host the Associated College Press awards ceremony this November, where Miami Dade College's AXIS and Miambiance magazines are finalists for prestigious Pacemaker honors. The student-run publications earned recognition for themed issues exploring topics like madness, heritage, grief, and self-reflection. Winners will be announced during the Fall National College Media Convention on November 7.
