Flash Flood Warning Issued For Somerset County

SOMERSET, NJ - The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a flash flood warning for Somerset County until 5:30 p.m.

As of 1:22 p.m., radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. "Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 2 to 3 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," the weather service said.

The warning also includes northern Mercer County, Middlesex County, and southeastern Hunterdon County.

The warning covers flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other low-lying and drainage-prone areas. Locations that may experience flash flooding include New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, Somerville, Somerset, Edison, East Brunswick, Bridgewater, South Brunswick, Sayreville, North Brunswick, Ewing and Carteret.

Affected highways include Interstate 295 between mile markers 67 and 76, the New Jersey Turnpike between exits 10 and 13, Interstate 287 between mile markers 0 and 20, Interstate 78 between mile markers 33 and 42, and the Garden State Parkway between mile markers 125 and 134.
