📰 News we're reading

1. House Fire Sparks In Bridgewater Home's Garage (patch.com) — Bridgewater residents saw a swift response Tuesday morning when volunteer firefighters contained a garage fire on Drum Hill Road in the Martinsville section before it could cause injuries. Multiple neighboring departments, Bridgewater Police, and the Fire Marshal assisted, and officials now believe recent foundation work likely sparked the blaze rather than an electric car charger. The Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department is also using the incident to encourage new volunteers from the community.

2. Bridgewater moves to end health benefits for future elected officials (mycentraljersey.com) — Bridgewater officials are moving to end taxpayer-funded health insurance for future mayors and council members, with a final vote set for Oct. 15. After spending more than $630,000 on elected officials' benefits in five years, leaders say the change will prioritize taxpayers and align Bridgewater with most nearby towns that no longer offer such coverage.

3. 18 BRHS Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists (TAPinto.net) — Bridgewater-Raritan High School just saw a record 18 students named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, the highest total in at least five years. This growing recognition highlights the strength of Bridgewater's academic programs and gives these seniors a strong shot at significant scholarship money when awards are announced next spring.

4. SCVTS 20th Annual Open House is Happening This October for Students to Explore (town.news) — Families across Somerset County can visit Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School's Bridgewater campus for its 20th Annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors can tour classrooms and shops, meet student ambassadors and advisors, sample culinary treats, and learn about 21 career and technical programs plus honors options like the Academy for Health & Medical Sciences.

5. Bridgewater students help write Steinhardt lung cancer screening bill (newjerseyglobe.com) — Bridgewater-Raritan High School students helped write a bipartisan bill that just cleared a key Senate health committee and would boost lung cancer screening awareness for New Jersey first responders and veterans. Their work with Sen. Doug Steinhardt and co-sponsor Sen. Andrew Zwicker would create a statewide education and referral program, including online resources to help at-risk residents access low-dose CT screenings earlier.
