METUCHEN, NJ — A former councilman and current Metuchen Planning Board member has passed away, Mayor Jonathan M. Busch said.

Alan Grossman, who served two terms on the Borough Council and was one of the longest-serving members of the Planning Board, passed away over the weekend, Busch said.

Described as someone who devoted "countless hours" to public service and community involvement, Grossman was also a member of the History Advisory Committee and held leadership roles with the Metuchen Educational Foundation and Metuchen Borough Improvement League.

"Alan was one of the kindest, most decent, and most dedicated people I have had the privilege to know in public life," Busch said. "He was a quiet force in our community whose loyalty, generosity, and steady commitment to Metuchen touched so many people over the years."

Beyond his official roles in the community, Busch said Grossman "embodied the spirit of volunteerism that makes Metuchen special."

As an Eagle Scout himself, scouting was central to Grossman's life, and he spent over five decades mentoring youth and serving the scouting community in his leadership roles.

Just last week, Grossman was awarded the Silver Antelope Award, one of scouting's highest national honors.

The award recognizes his "extraordinary character, leadership and lifetime of service to others."

"[Grossman] gave so much of himself to others with humility, warmth, and a genuine commitment to the community he loved," Busch said. "Our thoughts are with Alan’s family, loved ones, and the many people whose lives he impacted through his friendship and service."

As a tribute to Grossman and all he gave to Metuchen, Busch said mourning bunting will be hung at Borough Hall in his honor.
