'Cake Boss' To Host Event At 100th Hoboken Italian Festival Next Week

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken's traditional Madonna dei Matiri Italian Festival will have several special treats when it returns for its 100th year next week, including a surprise from TV's "Cake Boss."

The festival returns next Thursday through Sunday with live music, games, contests, food, and various vendors.

The highlight is "Feast Day," when organizers carry the 800lb statue of the Madonna Dei Martiri, or Madonna of the Martyrs, through the streets.

Instead of fireworks this year, a drone show will debut over the waterfront on Saturday.

'Cake Boss'

Buddy Valastro, the owner of Carlo's Bakery on Washington Street, announced in a social media video on Thursday that the bakery will have a presence at the festival.

"Carlo's Bakery is bringing the ultimate dessert experience to the hospitality suite to the centennial anniversary of the Hoboken Italian festival," Valastro noted.

He said he will be "on site, hanging out and serving up all your favorite Italian pastries" at a VIP suite. The event will require tickets available on the festival website (linked below).

History And More Information

The tradition of the Madonna Dei Martiri festvial goes back to the year 1399, when the King of Napoli, Ladislao di Durazzo, ordered that a street festival and religious celebration be combined to celebrate the “Miracle” and blessings of the Madonna.

"This celebration is traditionally held on September 8, which is the Universal Feast of the Nativity of Mary," the organizers have noted.

The festival runs along the south waterfront, on Sinatra Drive, starting Thursday.

Each night offers one or more live musicians and other events.
