Will Maroons ice cream return in Hoboken, and what about the Ridgewood location? An owner told all.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Another Hoboken ice cream shop has closed, its owner confirmed, although their Ridgewood location will remain open.

Maroons ice cream on upper Washington Street shut down earlier this month.

The shop opened at 1122 Washington St. in March 2024, specializing in large sundaes and shakes with ample toppings.

But the spot cleared out this month.

Mr. Patel, a co-owner, told Patch on Friday that the lease was to end in December and the landlord indicated that he had another idea for the spot.

Rather than wait around until December, Patel said, he and his partner decided to close because the colder season is coming.

But he said they will look to open elsewhere in Hoboken.

And he stressed that the location in Ridgewood, which also opened in 2024, will continue.

"It has a very long lease and it's going to be open forever," he said. "We're not planning to close."

He said they already extended their lease in Ridgewood.

Other Ice Cream Spots Closing And Coming Soon

The shop is the second ice cream spot on Washington Street to close this year.

Il Laboratorio del Gelato at 500 Washington St. closed with little fanfare on July 7, after being open since 2022. The owner, Jon Snyder, said too many other ice cream shops were opening nearby. Snyder had other locations to nurture. (Read more about that here.)

Several new ice cream spots have opened in Hoboken recently, including Odd Fellows on First Street and Van Leeuwen at 537 Washington St.

And the city has some unusual ice cream stores already here or on the way.

Paletas Morella on Washington Street sells ice cream on a stick, and an ice cream sandwich spot called the Baked Bear is coming soon.
