Alonzo Herran Jr. to Premiere Councilman At Large in Newark

Newark, New Jersey — Alonzo Herran Jr., a lifelong Newark resident and former Newark Police Detective, will premiere his documentary Councilman At Large on April 8, 2026, at the Newark Cityplex Theatre.

Herran retired from the Newark Police Department in 2018 after 20 years of service. Following his retirement, he continued his work in public service as Chief of Staff for a West Ward council office, where he oversaw staff and addressed a wide range of constituent concerns, including sanitation, street maintenance, and code enforcement matters. He later served as Assistant Manager within Newark’s Code Enforcement division, working directly with residents across the city on housing violations, public safety concerns, and quality-of-life issues.

In addition to his public service career, Herran is an author and independent filmmaker. Through his company, Royal Family Inc., he has produced 12 films, including the King of Newark trilogy, A Father’s Pride, and his most recent project, Eight Enough. His work focuses on community life, personal responsibility, and the realities of urban experience.

Councilman At Large documents Herran’s professional journey and his perspective on leadership and civic responsibility in Newark. The film is being released as Herran prepares his candidacy for Councilman At Large in 2026.

The premiere will include two showings at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Tickets are available through Eventbrite. Herran is seeking sponsorship support to provide access for residents from all five wards, with a goal of inviting 100 attendees per ward.
