Community Rallies To Save Therapeutic Horse Stable In Morristown

Thousands have signed a petition to preserve Seaton Hackney's Therapeutic Riding Program.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Thousands of people are rallying to save a horse stable's therapy program in Morristown, which is facing an uncertain future.

According to a Change.org petition, Seaton Hackney’s Stables Therapeutic Riding Program is on the verge of shutting down, and the community is urging the Morris County Park Commission to preserve it.

Seaton Hackney’s Stables, run by Equishare USA, LLC, is a horseback riding facility at 440 South Street. It's known for its family-oriented programs, including a therapeutic horseback riding program for children with special needs.

Petition organizer Ana Canchola Mendez uses her daughter, Estela, as an example of the benefits the therapy program is able to provide.

Estela is autistic, has limited verbal communication, and has been riding at Seaton Hackney’s for four years. According to her mother, the visits to the stables have become a "cherished part" of Estela's life.

"As her mother, these moments mean more than I can fully express. When communication is challenging, seeing your child express herself and take such pleasure in something she loves is deeply heartwarming," Mendez writes. "At Seaton Hackney, I get to celebrate Estela’s abilities and watch her grow."

She adds that her other two daughters have fallen in love with riding at Seaton Hackney, saying the stables have become part of their family.

The petition is specifically urging the Morris County Park Commission to do the following:

  • "Select Equishare USA, LLC, to continue operating Seaton Hackney Stables.
  • Give substantial weight to the existing therapeutic riding program and its impact on children and families.
Prioritize continuity of the familiar horses, experienced staff, and trusted instruction that support riders.
  • Meaningfully consider the voices of riders, parents, and the broader community in the lease decision."

The petition has garnered more than 2,500 signatures as of Tuesday morning. Click here to learn more.

"You do not need to be a rider to support this petition," it reads. "If you believe children deserve opportunities to flourish, families deserve to be heard, and established inclusive programs deserve meaningful consideration, please stand with us."
