South Brunswick Schools To Shut For 2nd Day As Blizzard Cleanup Continues

The district will close all schools Tuesday due to inclement weather.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — The South Brunswick School District will be closed Tuesday, as crews continue to battle the aftermath of a historic blizzard that buried Middlesex County under more than a foot of snow and left roads across the township treacherous and in some cases impassable.

The closure marks the district's second consecutive snow day, following a Monday shutdown that had been announced in advance as the nor'easter moved through the region.

The district has not announced whether makeup days will be added to the academic calendar. Under New Jersey state law, districts must meet a minimum number of instructional hours per year and are required to make up any time lost to emergency closures that push them below that threshold.

Conditions on the ground remained dangerous Monday morning. Several tractor-trailers became stuck overnight on Route 130 in deep snow, Miller Road was closed due to a downed tree, and Broadway Road was shut down due to downed wires. Officials warned that blowing and drifting conditions would persist through the afternoon, making travel dangerous across the township.

South Brunswick Township Department of Public Works plow crews worked through the night, but officials cautioned that the storm's scope means cleanup will take multiple days.
