2 North Jersey Immigrants Illegally Voted In Federal Elections: Officials

The pair is also accused of unlawfully attempting to procure United States citizenship, officials said.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — Two Passaic County immigrants are facing federal charges after illegally voting in a federal election, according to officials.

Andrea Morzetta, 72, an Italian immigrant living in North Haledon, and Antonio Mitchell, 54, a Jamaican national residing in Paterson, face a slew of charges following an investigation.

According to officials, both immigrants were not citizens when they registered to vote, but said they were during the process.

Morzetta entered the United States from Italy under P21 classification as the spouse of another immigrant resident, and Mitchell entered the United States from Jamaica on a B-2 visa, authorities said. Despite being in the country legally, neither classification provides citizenship status, and therefore, the right to vote in a federal election.

Morzetta voted in person in the November 2024 general election, while Mitchell voted in person in the 2022 general election, according to officials. Both elections included candidates who were vying for election to federal offices, officials added.

After voting in the elections, the pair applied for naturalization through an N-400 application form. Both individuals falsely claimed that they had never registered to vote or voted in any federal elections while applying, according to investigators.

Each is charged by separate complaints with voting by an alien in a federal election and unlawfully attempting to procure United States citizenship. Mitchell faces an additional charge of making false statements while applying for United States citizenship.

If convicted, they both face more than ten years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.
