Arrest Made In Deadly Chick-fil-A Shooting In Union County

UNION, NJ— An Irvington man has been charged with weapons offenses tied to the deadly shooting inside a Chick-fil-A in Union Township that left one person dead and several others injured last month, authorities announced Tuesday.

Prosecutors said 23-year-old Rahqueel Floyd was arrested on May 18 following an ongoing investigation into the April 11 shooting at the Route 22 restaurant.

According to authorities, the shooting happened around 9 p.m. inside the Chick-fil-A while numerous customers were inside the restaurant.

Six people suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries during the shooting, prosecutors said. A 23-year-old New York City man, identified as Malek Shepherd, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later determined that Floyd allegedly discharged a handgun inside the restaurant during the incident, according to prosecutors. He is charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.

Earlier this month, authorities also charged 20-year-old Jaheed Fields of Newark with murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses connected to the shooting.

Floyd is being held at the Essex County Jail pending a court appearance, prosecutors said.
