Residents Displaced After Two-Alarm Fire In Westfield

WESTFIELD, NJ — A late-night fire in Westfield has displaced Westfield residents on Maryland Street.

On Tuesday, just before 11 p.m., the Westfield Fire Department went to the 200 block of Maryland Street for a house fire.

Firefighters found a two-story single-family home with heavy smoke showing from the back, said the Westfield Fire Department.

Firefighters "immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack while simultaneously conducting a primary search of the residence to ensure all occupants had safely evacuated."

The main portion of the fire was found on the second floor of the home, according to the fire department.

The incident escalated to two alarms.

Off-duty Westfield Fire Department members were recalled to help at the scene.

Westfield Police aided with street closures, traffic, crowd control and scene security.

The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, along with emergency medical services from around the county, helped in providing firefighter rehabilitation.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was placed under control at 11:35 p.m., with firefighters remaining on scene into the overnight hours.

The fire was investigated by the Westfield Fire Department, and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature.

The Westfield Construction Official deemed the dwelling uninhabitable.

"The Westfield Fire Department reminds everyone that working smoke alarms save lives. Make sure that your smoke alarms are tested monthly and are less than 10 years old," said the fire department.
