📰 News we're reading

• Towns and villages scramble to clear brush, remove downed trees after nor'easter (newsday.com) — Glen Cove residents are still dealing with a messy nor'easter aftermath, with branches littering streets and a large pine down at Karen Road and Elm Avenue while city crews chip debris and fill tree trucks. Across Long Island, towns are waiving brush disposal fees, organizing special pickups, and removing hundreds of fallen trees from roads as utilities finish untangling limbs from power lines.

• Uber Driver Got High, Ignored Warnings, Then Killed Long Island Rider, DA Says (shorenewsnetwork.com) — A Glen Cove woman has pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and related charges after a drug-impaired driving crash on the Long Island Expressway killed a motorcyclist and severely injured her husband. Prosecutors say she ignored earlier warnings to stop driving after erratic behavior and a prior collision, and she now faces a potential seven to 21-year prison sentence at her November 19 hearing.

• Milestones: Pain Is Love by Ja Rule (shatterthestandards.com) — A Glen Cove connection runs through Ja Rule's landmark 2001 album, as then-19-year-old local native Ashanti sang many of its defining hooks before releasing her own debut. The piece revisits Pain Is Love's chart-topping success, its heavy 2Pac influence, and how label drama and industry shifts later undercut Murder Inc.'s dominance, while Ashanti now works to reclaim her masters.
