Nonprofit Helping 100+ Long Islanders With Cancer Plans Golf Fundraiser

HUNTINGTON, NY — A Huntington-based nonprofit founded by a breast cancer survivor will hold its first annual golf outing next month to raise money for Long Island adults and children facing cancer.

Ribbons Rising, founded in 2025 by Huntington mother Kristen D’Angelo, has provided assistance to more than 100 Long Islanders during its first year of fundraising, according to the organization.

Its First Annual Ribbons Rising Golf Outing is scheduled for Oct. 19, at The Muttontown Club. The event will serve as a “Pink Out” in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with attendees encouraged to wear pink.

“The outing will be a Pink Out in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re encouraging everyone to wear their pink best,” D’Angelo said. “I’ll be making my rounds in a pink golf cart. It should be such a fun day for a great cause.”

Ribbons Rising is a 501(c)(3) organization that assists individuals and families affected by all types and stages of cancer. Its support is tailored to recipients’ needs and has included transportation to treatment, grocery cards, meal-delivery services, wigs, prosthetics and connections to licensed counseling and emotional-support resources.

The nonprofit has also helped provide specialized prosthetic running blades and works with community partners on programming for patients and caregivers, including wellness-focused programs with Pal-O-Mine.

D’Angelo said her own experience with breast cancer inspired her to create the organization.

“Having experienced cancer myself, I know that the impact extends far beyond the diagnosis,” she said. “Families are trying to manage treatment while still putting food on the table, getting to appointments, caring for their children, and handling all the responsibilities of everyday life. I created Ribbons Rising so people in our own community would know they don't have to face those challenges alone.”

More than 50 volunteers have joined the organization since its founding, according to Ribbons Rising.

D’Angelo said the October fundraiser is intended to help the nonprofit reach additional families and expand the types of assistance it can provide.

“Every person’s cancer journey is different, and so are the challenges that come with it,” she said. “Sometimes what makes the greatest difference is something very practical, a ride to treatment, groceries for the week, a wig, counseling, or help paying for something insurance doesn't cover. Our goal is to be there when someone needs that help.”

Registration for the Oct. 19 outing begins at 10 a.m., followed by a noon shotgun start. Dinner is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Foursomes cost $2,500.

Proceeds will support Ribbons Rising programs and assistance for individuals and families affected by cancer.
