About The Candidates:
Roslyn resident Chin told Patch that she is running for the position because she believes public service should be about people – not politics.
Chin is a program manager at the North Shore University Hospital, and she has been an elected School Board Trustee for the Herricks Board of Education since 2013.
"For more than 20 years, I’ve served our community in different roles, from working in the Mineola School District to serving, first as President of the PTA for multiple years, and then on the Herricks Board of Education," Chin said. "I have been a Scout leader, a church deacon, and I’ve served the residents in the Town of North Hempstead and the community through my roles in the Town and at Northwell Health. These are not just experience; they are a record of my dedication to Nassau County. Through these various roles, I’ve seen firsthand how government decisions affect our families, students, seniors, and taxpayers."
Chin added:
"I want to bring that experience to the County Legislature to make Nassau more affordable, fix our broken property assessment system, protect our environment, support first responders and small businesses, and ensure our seniors and veterans can age in place with dignity.
At my core, I believe leadership starts with listening and is proven through action. I believe every resident deserves to be heard and represented, regardless of their political party or
background."
According to Nassau County's website, Strauss is a retired Detective from the Emergency Service Unit of the New York City Police Department and a Mineola resident.
"On September 11, 2001, Scott was part of a team that risked their lives to rescue two N.Y./N.J. Port Authority Police Officers trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center," the website states. "The story of these officers and their rescue was made into a movie directed by Oliver Stone, entitled 'World Trade Center.' Scott received the N.Y.P.D.’s highest award, the Medal of Honor for his actions that day."
He is a former Mayor of Mineola and held the position for four terms, starting in 2011. He has been part of the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department since 1981.
