Inmate Dies In Fire At Eastern State Correctional Facility In Ellenville: NYSP

Investigators said that at approximately 1:40 a.m., a fire began burning in a cell at Eastern Correctional Facility.

ELLENVILLE, NY — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at a Hudson Valley prison.

On Saturday, the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision notified the NYS Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Ellenville of the death.

Investigators said that at approximately 1:40 a.m., a fire began burning in a cell at Eastern Correctional Facility. Correctional facility staff extinguished the fire and found the victim, 35-year-old Marcos Alcaraz, in the cell. He was taken to Ellenville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The death is being investigated by the NYS Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations, the Ulster County Medical Examiner's Office, and the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The NYS Attorney General's Office was also notified and responded to the scene.
