'Disorderly Intoxicated Man' Slapped 15-Year-Old Boy In 7-Eleven, Took Swing At Police Officer's Head: Police

RAMAPO, NY — What began as a routine disorderly conduct call quickly turned dangerous, according to police in Rockland County.

The Town of Ramapo Police Department says that on Monday, around 8:45 p.m., officers responded to the 7-Eleven on College Road after receiving a report of a disorderly intoxicated man inside.

At the scene, police recognized the man from previous incidents at the location. The 31-year-old suspect from Monsey had been previously issued a trespass warning for the business, according to cops.

Investigators said the suspect had also slapped a 15-year-old boy while inside the store.

While officers were investigating the incident, the suspect suddenly swung at the back of an officer's head, according to police. The backup officer interceded and prevented the punch from connecting, helping to control the situtation before anyone was injured, according to the department.

"This incident is another reminder that there is no such thing as a 'routine' police call," Ramapo police said in a social media post. "Officers respond to these situations not knowing if they will be dealing with a cooperative individual, a mental health crisis, or someone willing to become violent without warning. Even a simple call to a convenience store can escalate in seconds. We are thankful for the quick actions and professionalism displayed by the responding officers."

The suspect was taken into custody and charged with third-degree attempted assault; endangering the welfare of a child; obstructing governmental administration; resisting arrest; disorderly conduct; and trespass.

He was processed and released to a responsible party, authorities said.

No injuries were sustained by officers, civilians, or the suspect.
