RIVERHEAD, NY — Sad news echoed on Main Street in Downtown Riverhead Friday as Mugs on Main announced that the business was set to close.

"It is with a sad and heavy heart," that Kasandra Watkins Schaeffer and her husband Jeff Schaeffer announced that Mugs on Main would be closing in Riverhead after Wednesday, October 14.

"We've been plagued with ongoing facility issues and flooding since opening our doors and we can't afford to continue to fix the problems," the announcement read. "We will miss the community of our regular customers — of being part of your daily lives, and you being a part of ours. Until then we'll be open for coffee and conversation every day from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m."

"We are so sorry to hear that Mugs on Main will be closing its downtown Riverhead location," said Jerry Dicecco, owner of Jerry & The Mermaid. "This is heartbreaking news, not only for the owners and their team, but for our entire downtown community."

He added: "A little public service announcement to all our friends and followers: Support your local coffee shop. Visit your local bookstore. Grab a sandwich from your neighborhood deli. Pick up a bagel from your local bagel shop. Dine at a locally owned restaurant. Shop at your neighborhood small businesses. Whenever possible, please shop local!"

Dicecco continued: "We appreciate all of you more than you could ever know. We truly couldn’t do what we do without your continued support. But here’s the reality. Small businesses are struggling right now. Behind every storefront are hardworking people, families, employees, and dreams. People who pour their hearts, souls, and countless hours into making their businesses work. And when one of those businesses closes, our entire community loses a little something special. It takes a village to make all of this work. And every cup of coffee, every bagel, every sandwich, every dinner out, every purchase, and every recommendation to a friend makes a difference. To our friends at Mugs on Main, we’re truly sorry to hear this news. Thank you for being part of downtown Riverhead. We wish you nothing but the best moving forward. Support local. Love local. Keep our downtown alive."
