📰 News we're reading

1. Man sentenced for deadly gunfire into Rochester home (13wham.com) — A Rochester man has been sentenced to 28½ years in prison for a 2025 shooting into a Ferris Street home that killed 23-year-old Jeremiah Maddox and wounded another man. Prosecutors say he was linked to the case after deputies later found him with the gun used, and they hope the lengthy term sends a strong message about gun violence in Rochester neighborhoods.

2. Down 100 officers, Rochester police make push to fill ranks as recruitment deadline nears (13wham.com) — Rochester's police department is short more than 100 officers and is urgently recruiting new candidates before the Sept. 18 civil service exam deadline. Leaders highlight strong pay, benefits, and an expanded age range of 19 to 42, while warning that current shortages can mean longer response times for city residents.

3. President Trump's Lake Ontario to Lake America rename: What it means for local lakeshore communities (whec.com) — Local leaders in Rochester and Monroe County say they won't rename Lake Ontario or change lakeshore signs despite President Trump's order to call it Lake America. Researchers from the University of Rochester's Lake Ontario microplastics center are now weighing whether federally funded projects and official titles must adjust, even as Google Maps has already switched the lake's name for U.S. users.

4. Strong Museum of Play area expands at Rochester airport (democratandchronicle.com) — Families flying through Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport now have a much larger Strong National Museum of Play area to enjoy in Concourse A, right by the Flight Deck Diner. The expanded 1,000-square-foot space adds oversized classic toys and two new interactive digital games, complementing the existing Concourse B play zone for kids waiting on Rochester-area flights.

5. Rochester and Syracuse among cities sharing $20 million for youth programs (fingerlakes1.com) — Rochester is getting $2 million in new state funding for youth programs aimed at expanding opportunity and preventing violence, as part of New York's $20 million Project RISE initiative. Local leaders will decide how to split the money among mentoring, mental health, arts, sports, job training, and other supports, continuing several rounds of investment already flowing to the city.
