As boating season approaches, members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Eastern Long Island
Division are reminding the public that safety on the water starts before you ever leave the dock.
In New York State, boating safety education is not just recommended—it is required. Anyone
operating a motorized vessel, including boats and personal watercraft such as Jet Skis, must
complete an approved Boater Safety Course, regardless of age.
Before heading out on the water, the Auxiliary encourages all boaters to review these essential
safety tips:
Take a Boater Safety Course – Ensure you meet New York State requirements and
understand the rules of the water.
Wear a Life Jacket – Properly fitted life jackets save lives; children under 12 must wear
them at all times. Ensure all lifejackets are in an accessible location.
Check the Weather – Conditions can change quickly; always review the forecast before
departing.
File a Float Plan – Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to
return.
Carry Required Safety Equipment – This includes visual distress signals, a sound-
producing device, fire extinguishers, and navigation lights.
Avoid Alcohol While Boating – Boating under the influence is illegal and significantly
increases risk.
Get a Free Vessel Safety Check – Offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary to help ensure
your boat meets federal and state requirements so you don’t become an emergency on the
water.
These simple steps can make a significant difference in preventing accidents and ensuring a safe
and enjoyable day on the water.
Coast Guard Auxiliary members also teach Boater Safety Courses throughout the community,
helping both new and experienced boaters gain the knowledge they need to operate responsibly.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is always looking for dedicated individuals to serve their community.
Whether you are an experienced mariner or simply want to give back, there are many ways to get
involved.
