William Floyd HS Varsity Cheer Finishes In Top 3 In Suffolk Championship

The team finished its best season —​ following up a recent national ranking of 16 at the UCA National Cheerleading Competition.

MASTIC BEACH, NY — The William Floyd High School varsity cheer team finished its best season yet — following up a recent national ranking of 16, with a top-three finish at the Suffolk County Championships this past weekend, school district officials said.

The team placed 16 at UCA National Cheerleading Competition finals in Orlando, FL, from Feb. 6-8, with the Colonials competing in the Medium DI category, delivering two consecutive zero-deduction routines that propelled them to the semifinals and the finals.

In the finals, against the best teams in the nation, they landed another zero-deduction routine that earned them the honor of finishing 16th in the entire nation.

Coach Jessica Alvi said that she and assistant coach Lillianna Stafford "could not be prouder of the entire team."

This team has grit, determination, and drive," she said. "They weren't letting anything stop them from reaching their goal of competing on the mat against some of the most incredible well-known teams in the nation. They exceeded every goal we set for them and did it with grace while also maintaining their sportsmanship.”

Senior captains Lizzie Marino, Kiara Fasano, and Olivia Horstmann have helped guide the team to success with motivation and resilience.

All three have been a large part of the team’s growth since they joined the varsity squad since 8th grade. As they graduate, their legacy will be carried on by their teammates and those who follow in their footsteps in the program.

Varsity team members also include juniors Annaleah Guzman, Jaianna Hall, Yessalyn Quintanilla, Madison Weissbach, Andreya Wilson; sophomores Selena Durham, and Sophia Iorio; and freshmen Shealynn Auwarter, Jaliyah Cuevas, Jocelyn Miller, Gianna Reyes, Abigail Roland, Brielle Ward-Appiah, Alexis Williams, and Julianna Zach.
