Governor announces grant to Greenburgh- pedestrians will be able to walk from Yonkers-WP on Central Ave
will make Central Ave pedestrian friendly
News & Town Board Reports (gblist)Posted on October 15, 2026Yesterday I received a call from Governor Kathy Hochul's office announcing that the Town of Greenburgh was awarded $4.7 million for an important new sidewalk that will enable pedestrians and cyclists to walk or bicycle safely from White Plains to Yonkers on Central Ave. The Town Board unanimously approved a resolution in February of this year supporting an application for the NYS Transportation Alternatives Program Grant. Commissioner of Planning Garrett Duquesne worked very hard on the grant application.
6,150 linear feet of sidewalk gaps will be filled. Central Ave currently has some sidewalks, but there are gaps so pedestrians and cyclists can't get from the White Plains line to Yonkers safely using some sidewalks. It is very dangerous to walk or ride a bicycle on Central Ave—a very busy road. Work is expected to start around 2028.
This grant is the latest grant the town has received from NYS relating to sidewalks/pedestrian safety. We previously received a $5 million grant to build a sidewalk on West Hartsdale Ave from Central Ave and related pedestrian improvements from Senator Cousins. That initiative is in design, and construction should start next year. A $3.8 million dollar grant was secured to build a sidewalk on Old Army Road. That sidewalk is also anticipated to start next year. A $2.3 million grant for a sidewalk on Knollwood Road will enable pedestrians and cyclists to safely get to the Greenburgh Library from W Hartsdale Ave. The town previously built a sidewalk on Hillside Ave, with a $1,000,000 grant from the state. And a sidewalk was built with state dollars on Central Ave from the 4 corners to Marion Ave.Separately, Greenburgh also secured a $1 million in federal community project funding for the Dobbs Ferry Road sidewalk project which was built in 2025/2026. We received funding for that project from former Congressman Mondaire Jones.
The town appropriates funds each year for new sidewalks - our goal to make Greenburgh a very walkable community.PAUL FEINERGreenburgh Town Supervisor
