Stony Brook Toastmasters Open House

Effective speaking skills not only help you land a job it helps you build your career and business

For the past 20 years I'v been a member of this Stony Brook, Brookhaven NY club. Why? My why may be slightly different then yours but our goals may be very similar. Mine was quite simple. I was advancing in my career and found myself promoted to a leadership role. That was the good news the challange is that I was not an effective speaker. After looking into a few other programs I was introduced to Toastmasters. Lower cost, lower stress and go at your own pace. Sounds good right, but what if you want someone to help you when you need a push. Many of the clubs will assign a mentor to you. That person will guide you along but still allow you to find a pace that works for you. My aim was to get better quicker so I spoke frequently, enjoyed getting and giving feedback and even entered into the speech contests. It's enjoyable when speaking at your home club. You know the members and they give you positive comments. When you're in a contest you win or your lose. Reality is that with an open mind even when you lose you learn more but it's definetly more stressful. I'd like to continue and I will on future articles. Just ask any question. In the meantime please join us Feb 12th at our StonyBrook Open house. For those in other areas, I can guide you to other clubs and the new one we are looking to establish in Riverhead. Just ask.

and so it was - Great evening and more guests then we have had in while - some in person and others on screen.
