📰 News we're reading

1. Freight Distress Report: More than 7,000 jobs cut in new wave of closures (freightwaves.com) — Utica is losing 62 jobs as Ferraro Foods of New York North shuts down its local foodservice distribution operation for economic reasons, with layoffs effective by August 18. The closure is part of a broader national wave of freight, logistics, and manufacturing cutbacks affecting more than 7,000 workers, reshaping shipping networks and job prospects across many states.

2. Devils prospect's status still up in the air after August 15 deadline (pucksandpitchforks.com subscription) — Utica hockey fans may soon see Devils prospect Samu Salminen in a Comets sweater, as he remains under New Jersey's control and could slot into the team's bottom nine if signed. The 23-year-old NCAA champion center is weighing options between a pro deal, another college season, or possibly playing in Europe while his rights stay with the Devils.

3. Utica Police arrest man for three armed robberies in three days (cnyhomepage.com) — Utica Police say they've arrested an 18-year-old Utica resident in connection with three armed robberies committed over three days on Mohawk and Broad Streets. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly used a handgun to threaten a deli worker, a delivery driver, and a smoke shop, before being identified through surveillance footage and charged with multiple counts of first-degree robbery.

4. 33 Years Ago Sara Anne Wood Disappeared, Search Continues Today (bigfrog104.com) — Utica is closely tied to the legacy of 12-year-old Sara Anne Wood, whose 1993 disappearance near Frankfort still drives searches and awareness efforts today. A small group of cyclists once rode from Utica to Washington, D.C., sparking the Ride for Missing Children, which now draws thousands and supports the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

5. Utica man charged after traffic stop in Broome County turns up two illegal handguns (cnycentral.com) — A Utica man is facing several felony weapon charges after state police say a traffic stop in the Town of Chenango uncovered two illegal handguns, including a defaced firearm and a so‑called ghost gun.
