"As temperatures rise during the summer months, we'd like to remind everyone that the inside of a vehicle's interior can become dangerously hot in just a matter of minutes," the department said. "Infants, young children, and pets are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses."
Public safety officials said a few practiced steps could help avoid a crisis:
- Always check that you have your keys before closing your vehicle door.
- Never leave a child or pet unattended inside a parked vehicle—even for a short time.
- If you discover a child or pet locked inside a vehicle, call 9-1-1 immediately. Every second counts.
"We commend the quick actions of Sergeant Todd Horgan and Police Officer Matthew Johnson, their teamwork helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion," the department said. "We're here when you need us — whether it's an emergency, an accident, or simply helping our community stay safe."
