KALETA &amp; SUPER YAMBA BAND Brooklyn’s Kaleta &amp; Super Yamba Band are fronted by Afrobeat and Juju veteran Leon Ligan-Majek a.k.a. Kaleta. The singer/guitarist from the West African country of Benin Republic lived his adolescent life in Lagos, Nigeria where Afrobeat was born. Kaleta’s guitar chops earned him decades of touring and recording with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Lauryn Hill and more. Kaleta got his start in the late 70s performing in church and was soon after picked up by iconic Juju master and world music pioneer King Sunny Ade. A few years later Fela Kuti came calling. Kaleta would go on to tour the world playing guitar for the King of Afrobeat in his storied band Egypt 80 through the 1980s and into the 1990s. Now based in New York City, Kaleta has been leading Super Yamba Band since 2017. Their debut album ‘Mèdaho,’ which was released by California indie label Ubiquity Records, draws on the group’s shared reverence for the raw, psychedelic sounds that captivated Kaleta as a music loving kid in 1970s Benin. Mèdaho means “big brother”, “elder” or “teacher” and is dedicated to Kaleta’s late brother Ligan-Ozavino Pascal who introduced him to funk and soul music at a very early age. The album was included on Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of Summer 2019” list and two of the songs were chosen for the ABC/Hulu series High Fidelity staring Zoe Kravitz. Kaleta and his band have also erupted onto the stages and video screens of major music festivals and music publications across the US. They performed at the historic Apollo Theatre in 2019. They even prompted Action Bronson to stop his own show on VICELAND TV just so he could hear more Yamba. They also performed on Adult Swim’s Fishcenter Live show in 2019. CHRIS ACKER &amp; THE GROWING BOYS In a genre full of tall tales and marketable lies, New Orleans’ Chris Acker crafts candid songs – weaving his wit and woes into a body of work that exposes the stale plight of the American Songster to the honest, and sometimes hilarious, light of day. In the tradition of Guthrie and Prine, Chris lends a quavering voice to the half-rotten romance of the unremarkable and unrefined. Regardless if you’re sitting by a backyard fire on a muggy Louisiana night or standing stage-side in some far flung town, when you hear Chris Acker playing, you’re hearing the end result of countless hours of observing the masters of the craft…and the end result of repeating their mistakes.
From the folk revival through the golden age of country music, deafened by punk shows and brass bands alike, Chris’s songwriting is a nod to the absurd yet muted brilliance that inhabits the molded corners of the bars he patrons and cratered street he treads, paired with a pained honesty that merits a long second look.
Acker released his fourth full-length album, Famous Lunch, on Gar Hole Records in October of 2024. Famous Lunch contains some of his best work yet: laid back, country-rockers like “Wouldn’t Do For You (Buddy)” and “Sh*t Surprise” (which Paste Magazine called a “song of the year contender” in 2024), a few raucous, bar-ready joints like “Don’t You Know (Who I Think I Am)” and “Bunn Machine”, and tender, folky triumphs like “Stubborn Eyes” and “Eyelash”, all showcasing Chris’ gift of building “vivid scenes at an impressively low word count” (No Depression).
Acker tours solo or with his band The Growing Boys — Zach Thomas (bass), Nikolai Shveitser (pedal steel), Dave Hammer (guitar, vocals), Sam Gelband (drums, vocals), and occasionally Howe Pearson (piano).
CREEKBED CARTER HOGAN For&nbsp; folksinger Creekbed Carter Hogan, everything good is made from the rotten stump of something else. It’s a theme they’ve become familiar with as they’ve made a life weaving stories of growing up religious around songs that pierce the soul, tickle the funny bone, and showcase a unique blend of self-taught folk picking and mayhem.
Creekbed Carter, out with Gar Hole Records on March 22 2024, is Hogan at their most confident. Deftly crafted with folk sensibilities, country swagger, and a power emanating from the force of their own desires, their new self-titled album is both creed and archive: a defiant declaration of survival and solidarity in an otherwise limited world.

Beth Lee is a bluegrass and Americana artist rooted in the traditions of the genre and driven by a deep passion for lyrical storytelling. Inspired by her roots in the Hill Country of Austin, Texas and her home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, her sense of place is woven into every lyric. Songs that invite the listener on a journey — to be taken away by a story, or simply reminded of the human highway we’re all sharing.
In a city where the song writers are committed to authenticity, Kevin Smith is a beacon and mentor for exactly that. His voice is of a man who emerged from the mountains hell bent on crafting songs that are true to his life and relevant to ours. At AVLfest in 2024, a song writer from Nashville told Fiddle Man that he drove six hours to see Planefolk just to get back to the emotional roots of songwriting that can get lost in production houses of Nashville. We all need to get back to the core of our humanity, Kevin helps us get there.
Multi-instrumentalist Miriam Allen has spent hundreds of days &amp; nights alone in remote Appalachian coves swimming &amp; writing songs in her anchored sailboat. Curious about other cultures &amp; nature, she is a lifelong outdoor adventurer, backpacker, naturalist, &amp; activist for humanitarian &amp; conservation efforts. Her songs are emotionally charged &amp; give a voice to those who often don’t have one: wild spaces, wounded souls &amp; playful humans alike. Adama Dembele is Bambara and was born in Ivory Coast, West Africa. He is a master djembefola that has performed for communities all over the world. Adama is a 33rd generation musician from his family and teaches the music and culture of West African djembe and balafon in Asheville. Adama formed Les Amis to perform his traditional West African songs in a modern format with electric guitar, electric bass, drum kit and saxophone. The fusion of these instruments with his traditional djembe and balafon produced a high-energy dance band that offers audiences a one of a kind world music experience.

Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre (SART) is set to make regional history with its upcoming production of the classic musical, The Music Man. Running for six performances from July 30 to August 2, this groundbreaking production marks the first time in Western North Carolina that the beloved show will be performed entirely by a cast and crew aged 55 and older.
In a culture that heavily celebrates youth, SART’s unique production shines a spotlight on the maturity, wisdom, and unbridled joy that experienced performers bring to the stage. The 55+ ensemble is determined to prove that artistic passion deepens with time, offering audiences a refreshing, life-tested perspective on an enduring story.
"Music Man&nbsp;proves its timelessness, from its rousing '76 Trombones' to its tender reminder in 'Till There Was You' that just one person can positively affect many," said director JaniceVertucci Schreiber.Set in 1912, the show brings critical lessons for our modern age: how we treat those less fortunate, how we unite for a common purpose, and how we see the best in others despite differences. Schreiber, who conducted extensive research into composer Meredith Willson’s life, has envisioned the musical with a distinct focus on the character of Winthrop. In this production, Winthrop’s experiences with disability and ostracization mirror Willson’s own childhood, serving as the emotional bridge that brings lead characters Harold Hill and Marian Paroo together.
The production boasts an exceptional creative team. Musical director Patty Sands brings a celebrated career in classical music to the production, while choreographer Jillian Adams has the cast dancing with absolute abandon…. despite their collective knee replacements.
Lead actress Anne Moebes (68) sums it up…"I'm thrilled to be channeling Marian, with whom I share so much in common . . . well . . . except her age and dress size."
