1. Woman dies 5 days after alleged DWI crash in North Carolina (myfox8.com) — A woman injured in a serious crash at West W.T. Harris Boulevard and Statesville Road in north Charlotte has died five days after the collision, police say. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report the pickup driver was allegedly impaired and now faces an upgraded felony death by vehicle charge, with a $1 million secured bond and the investigation still active.
   

2. Can Private Sector Fund Preserve Affordable Housing in Charlotte? Shelterforce (shelterforce.org) — Charlotte's Housing Impact Fund is using $225 million in mostly private capital to buy and preserve older apartment complexes so low- and moderate-income residents aren't displaced by rising rents. Working with the city and Mecklenburg County, the fund keeps many units affordable for households far below area median income, complementing Charlotte's voter-approved housing bonds as leaders race to close a massive affordable housing gap.
   

3. CMS goes back to class for first day of school (wccbcharlotte.com) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students are back in class, with 858 buses serving about 72,000 riders across roughly 25,500 stops as more than 144,000 students return. Superintendent Crystal Hill is back from paid leave after an investigation, and the school board will decide tonight whether to release details of that probe, a move that could shape future district leadership and operations.
   

4. Charlotte exec sees mixed outcome after bank appeals $22M retaliation case award (charlotteobserver.com) — A federal appeals court has cut a former Charlotte-based Wells Fargo executive's jury award from about $22 million to $18 million, tossing several disability-related claims but upholding a key retaliation finding. The ruling trims back pay and eliminates punitive damages, yet leaves a large front-pay award and sends part of the case back to the trial court, keeping the high-profile Charlotte employment dispute alive.
   

5. Charlotte, NC: Young Soccer Player Ellie Keller Shows Encouraging Signs in Recovery (theunionstar.com) — A young Charlotte-area soccer player, Ellie Keller, is showing steady medical improvement as her kidneys and lungs strengthen and doctors slowly reduce her sedation. Her family, Southlake Christian, Charlotte Soccer Academy, and supporters across the Charlotte soccer community are rallying around her with prayers and messages, encouraged by small but meaningful signs like her responding to commands and moving her toes.
