Activism in Action: A Conversation with Manolo Betancur Sept. 26 (charlotteonthecheap.com) — Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is hosting a free coffee-and-conversation event with local activist and business leader Manolo Betancur on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, at Higher Grounds inside the Center of Hope on Queens Road. Residents 16 and older can register to hear how his advocacy has shaped a more welcoming Charlotte and watch the short documentary "The Changebaker."

Volunteers are making a map of Charlotte's trees (wsoctv.com) — Charlotte volunteers are fanning out through the historic Hoskins neighborhood to map trees and guide future plantings, part of TreesCharlotte's push to grow the city's canopy. Their data will help target new trees, care for aging ones, and support the City of Charlotte's goal of planting 800 trees a year and reaching 50% street canopy by 2050.
   

3. Report on Charlotte-Mecklenburg School superintendent investigation left off school board agenda (wbtv.com) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board members were expecting to review an investigation report on Superintendent Crystal Hill at Tuesday's meeting, but it was left off the agenda despite earlier emails. The district faces nearly $380,000 in investigation costs, questions over unpaid invoices, a possible shake-up of board leadership, and a newly requested state criminal probe into alleged financial irregularities.
   

4. Memorial grows for man killed by CMPD officer as community calls for justice (wccbcharlotte.com) — Charlotte residents are gathering at a growing memorial in north Charlotte for Curtis Massey, who was shot and killed by a CMPD officer on Friday. While police say the officer perceived an imminent deadly threat when Massey displayed a gun, a witness disputes that account, and the State Bureau of Investigation is now leading a formal review as the officer remains on paid leave.
   

5. Charlotte startups vie for $50,000 NC IDEA grants (qcitymetro.com) — Three Charlotte startups—Brokerteq Tech, Scenergy, and TheoryNXT—have been named semifinalists for $50,000 NC IDEA SEED grants, standing out among 195 applicants statewide. Their work spans real estate software, grid technology, and AI-driven retail, giving Charlotte's innovation community a shot at fresh funding to test markets and grow their businesses.
