📰 News we're reading
1. CMS fast-tracks sweeping changes to DEI policies (wsoctv.com) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has rushed through major policy changes to comply with a new state law restricting diversity, equity and inclusion programs, stripping terms like "minority" and "women" from contracting rules. Board members say they'll still push for fair access while also adjusting attendance policies to allow weekly off-campus religious instruction, raising concerns about lost classroom time.

Parent says Charlotte-Mecklenburg school bus dropped off children in wrong neighborhood (wbtv.com) — A Charlotte mother says her two young children were mistakenly dropped off about 20 minutes from home by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools bus, ending up with a stranger after a three-hour ride. The incident comes as CMS acknowledges broader transportation glitches and works to fix routing and a new bus app, leaving some parents wary of putting kids back on the bus.

4. Man accused of setting Dilworth home on fire found 'incapable to proceed' (wbtv.com) — A man accused of intentionally setting his Dilworth home on fire in May 2025, damaging neighboring houses, has been found incapable to proceed in court and ordered to a state hospital unless his competency can be restored through a North Carolina program. The explosion on Lombardy Circle fully engulfed the house but did not injure nearby residents. Charges against him include multiple counts of first-degree arson and malicious use of explosives.

5. Tiny house villages are increasingly responding to the homeless crisis in America's fast-growing cities (nhregister.com) — Charlotte is now the fastest-growing large city in the country, but that boom is coming with a sharp rise in homelessness and soaring rents for local residents. Two housing researchers explain how tiny house villages and other resident-led models are emerging nationwide as one response to strained housing systems. They highlight Charlotte's severe shortage of affordable units and shrinking exits from homelessness.
