Cornelius Police Chief David Baucom to Retire Dec. 31 (corneliustoday.com) — Cornelius residents will see a major leadership change as Police Chief David Baucom retires Dec. 31 after nearly 28 years with the town's department. He's credited with expanding specialized units, launching a co-responder mental health program, and advocating for better officer pay. Town officials say a plan for new leadership, likely an internal promotion, will be announced next week.
   

2. Halloween Decor Contest Now Open (corneliustoday.com) — Cornelius homeowners can now sign up for the town's annual Halloween Decorating Contest, with entries accepted through Oct. 14 and judging Oct. 20–28. Displays must be kid-appropriate, non-discriminatory, and non-political, and participants agree to have photos and addresses shared on Cornelius Parks and Recreation channels. Winners in two categories will be announced Oct. 30.
   

3. USA TODAY Sports Super 15 East region football rankings, Week 8 (usatoday.com) — Cornelius readers will be glad to know Hough High's football team is ranked No. 2 in USA TODAY's East Region Super 15 after starting the season 6-0. The rankings rundown highlights Hough's upcoming home game against Garinger and shows how other top East Coast programs are faring this fall.
   

4. CATS rolls out new and expanded service across Mecklenburg County (qcnews.com) — Cornelius commuters will gain a new option as CATS launches Route 177, the North Meck Connector, offering hourly weekday service between Uptown Charlotte and the Cornelius Park & Ride. Several existing routes are increasing frequency, and microtransit hours in the North Meck zone are extending to 9 p.m. daily. These upgrades are funded by last year's transit referendum.
