ā¢ Brenda Harris sworn in as Newport's new mayor (witn.com) ā Newport residents have a new mayor: longtime community volunteer and former council member Brenda Harris has been sworn in to replace retiring Mayor Dennis Barber after more than 12 years of his service. Harris, who worked 37 years at Fleet Readiness Center East and remains active in local churches and volunteer groups, will serve until the November 2027 municipal election while her former council seat awaits an appointed replacement.

ā¢ Sandra 'Sandy' Lee Mayhew Christenbury, 84 (portcitydaily.com) ā Family and friends are mourning Sandra āSandyā Lee Mayhew Christenbury, who passed away April 11 at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport after a life devoted to teaching, family, and community service. Though she recently lived in Wilmington, Sandy cherished her years along the Crystal Coast, stayed active in local clubs and schools, and her family suggests memorial gifts to the Newport-based hospice, dementia research, or heart health organizations.
