📰 News we're reading

1. TriMet to enact sweeping service cuts amid a massive budget shortfall (opb.org) — Starting today, TriMet is slashing MAX Green Line and dozens of bus routes, forcing many Portland riders to transfer at Gateway instead of riding directly downtown or to Portland State University. The agency cites a $300 million budget shortfall, lingering post-pandemic ridership losses, and rising costs, and warns that even these historic cuts won't fully close its long-term deficit.

2. 3 arrested, 5 guns seized after brief shelter-in-place, suspect search in SE Portland (koin.com) — An overnight police operation in Southeast Portland led to three arrests and the seizure of five unlawfully possessed guns after a traffic stop turned into a brief chase and shelter-in-place alert. Portland police used drones, spike strips, and K9 teams around SE Belmont and Ankeney streets, later lifting the shelter order once suspects were detained and the area was secured.

3. This charming coastal city is an easy escape from Portland with new nonstop flights (oregonlive.com) — Portlanders now have an easier escape to coastal Bellingham, Washington, thanks to new Alaska Airlines nonstop flights from Portland International Airport, with a second daily flight coming in November. The article highlights Bellingham's bike-friendly waterfront, hiking and mountain biking trails, evolving waterfront attractions, and relaxed food and drink scene tailored to visitors from Portland.

4. Shelly's Kids's GoFundMe Profile (gofundme.com) — Family and friends are mourning Shelly Dato, who recently died in Portland and are asking for help to transport her to California for burial. A GoFundMe is raising money for Portland funeral services, transport from Portland to California, and burial costs so she can be laid to rest near loved ones.

5. Oregon Farm Bureau push back on Trump beef import plan (kptv.com) — From Portland Farm Bureau leaders are blasting President Trump's new plan to temporarily waive tariffs on some imported ground beef, warning it could undercut ranchers as they rebuild herds. They argue cheaper foreign beef may briefly ease grocery bills but ultimately harms Oregon's cattle industry and conflicts with an "America First" message.
