UPPER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — One of the world's largest biopharmaceutical companies is investing $800 million in Montgomery County to expand its operations.

The announcement earlier this month that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) will funnel its future through Upper Merion Township will have ripple effects on the local economy and community at large.

GSK currently sits on a massive 2.2 million square foot plot on 709 Swedeland Road. They originally moved to the area in 1979.

GSK's operations in Upper Merion have been separated across various, distinct buildings, which have focused on developing and producing clinical supplies and biological medicines.

The site includes 43 different buildings. A portion of these are being demolished as part of the newly announced reconstruction and expansion.

The new site

The new facility will provide commercial scale manufacturing of products while unifying the previously scattered efforts into a single "flex factory."

The biopharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing hub will also provide research and development for the company at a single location.

“Investing in additional commercial and R&D manufacturing with advanced digital capabilities at our Upper Merion site will help accelerate the development and supply of future medicines for patients,” Regis Simard, the president of GSK's global supply chain, said in a statement.

What it means for the local economy

GSK's existing 4,500 jobs in Upper Merion will stay put. An additional 300 jobs will be added in the next five years.

GSK has significant tax credit motivation to stay put, as they will receive benefits through the state's Qualified Manufacturing Innovation and Reinvestment Deduction program and the Manufacturing Tax Credit (MTC) program, according to the Department of Community and Economic Development.

GSK's US headquarters is in nearby Philadelphia. The company made a similar $800 million investment in its Lancaster County operations in the fall of 2024.

“(Pennsylvania) has been an important partner in supporting GSK's growth, innovation, and manufacturing footprint in the United States," Simard added. "By expanding in Upper Merion, we're building on that longstanding partnership while creating high-quality jobs and strengthening our ability to deliver the next generation of medicines.”

Timeline

Construction is slated to begin in early 2027, with the goal of opening up the new expansion by 20230.

The news comes less than a year after another global pharma giant, Johnson and Johnson, announced plans to build a $1 billion campus in Lower Gwynedd.
